Our Funding Sources

Daybreak is a non-profit organization run by a few professional staff members supported by dedicated volunteers. We rely on funding from various levels of government as well as contributions from private donors, foundations, churches and service clubs.

Our supportive housing model is based on meeting the needs of our residents-they pay rent geared to income and have access to professional staff for support. However, this means our rental income is not sufficient to meet the combined costs of staff salaries and operating our homes, including heat, utilities and maintenance. Government funds administered through the Consolidated Homelessness Prevention Program (CHPP) represent about 30% of our income each year, but these funds are not enough to cover all our costs. Even with government support, we face an annual shortfall of 20%, which amounts to between $80,000 and $100,000. Only through extra income from private donations are we able to make ends meet each year.

Your donation, whether of time or money, makes a substantial difference to our bottom line.

Daybreak's supportive housing services were initially made possible through federal and provincial funding from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the Ontario Ministries of Community & Social Services (MCSS) and Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH). Our fifth home was developed with new funding from the federal Supporting Communities Partnership Initiatives (SCPS) program and the Provincial Homelessness Initiatives Fund (PHIF). The City of Ottawa now administers all of Daybreak's government funding.

Thanks to recent government grants and funding programs, Daybreak has successfully undertaken substantial capital improvements to its homes. Since 2008, windows, roofs, foundations, driveways, and furnaces have been replaced, improving the energy efficiency and comfort of these homes. These improvements not only reduce our operating costs but also place us on a more secure financial footing for the future. All capital requirements anticipated by 2030, at forecasted costs of about $650,000, have now been completed under the grant programs. We are pleased to acknowledge the support of the various levels of government (municipal, provincial and federal) that made it possible for Daybreak to complete the capital renovations necessary in our homes. As well, we would like to recognize and thank the various other foundations, clubs, community partners and individual donors who have given generously to support our cause of "Rebuilding lives, Inspiring hope."
