AGM 2010

Coffee and cookies welcomed Daybreak's board, staff and supporters when they met for the organization's Annual General Meeting on Monday, April 19, 2010. For the first time the meeting was held at St. George's Roman Catholic Church, a near neighbour to Piccadilly House. In addition to reports from the President, Treasurer, Executive Director, and several committees, those attending heard from two inspiring speakers.

Robert, a resident of Flora House, spoke movingly about how Daybreak has changed his life. He was a broken person when he arrived two years previously, he said, but now, thanks to a secure home life, support and direction, he is a much stronger person, working to re-establish ties with his family and volunteering in his community.

"Let's Get Serious About Housing" was the subject of guest speaker Dick Stewart's address. Mr. Stewart is the former General Manager of People Services for the City of Ottawa and now serves on the Board of Governors for the Community Foundation of Ottawa. He began by congratulating Daybreak for providing high-quality services and facilities that in the bond world would earn it a AAA rating. He then explained how we in Ottawa now have an opportunity to get serious about housing. As the province continues to upload social programs from municipalities over the next eight years, it will release up to $120 million annually of the city's tax dollars. Mr. Stewart suggested that the city be encouraged to allocate a sizable portion of this amount, $25 million per year, to its social housing programs, and challenged Daybreak to use its moral authority toward this end.

Daybreak's President recognized Diana Bond as its 2009 Volunteer of the Year. Diana is a member of the Communications Committee, who also hosted a wonderful outdoor party in June, 2009 that raised both funds and awareness for Daybreak.

The following individuals were elected to serve as Daybreak's Board of Directors for 2010:

Greg Fyffe, President
Rob Dekker, First Vice-President
Bonnie Szanto, Treasurer
Laura Smith, Secretary
Carolyn Black
